  • 100 Questions from the Qur'an

How does Allah abrogate previous revelation?
He causes Muhammad to forget it (Q2:106; Q16:101).

How many other prophets are mentioned in the Qur’an with regard to abrogation of their revelations?
    None.

Let me understand this. The final prophet has revelations given to him and then he might be caused to forget them – OR – he is given revelation and then Allah changes a later one for the earlier.

And this happens only with the final, unchangeable, inimitable, perfect revelation?

    What am I missing?

  • 100 Questions from the Qur'an

Who are the best of all Muslims?
"Those who believe, and suffer exile and strive with might and main in Allah’s cause with their goods and their persons, have the highest rank in the sight of Allah…”(Q9:20).

So some Muslims are better than others?
No, the verse means that those Muslims who went through the exile from Mecca to Medina (hijra) and subsequently fought for Allah (jihad) have the highest rank – that is, the most respect.

But doesn’t that mean that after that time period – or when the last of these “Companions” died – that no Muslim can be in the highest rank?
    Yes, that’s what it means.

What promise is made to these Muslims of the highest rank?
“They are the people who will achieve (salvation)” (Q9:20).

    Won’t other Muslims achieve salvation?
Only certain groups are promised salvation. Outside of those groups, there is no promise.

  • 100 Questions from the Qur'an

The last thought on the question, "What is the appropriate relationship for Muslims with people of the book?"

Q5:82 = “Strongest among men in enmity to the believers wilt thou find the Jews and pagans; and nearest among them in love to the believers wilt thou find those who say, ‘We are Christians’ . . .

So on the one hand, Muslims should be wary of the PofB because they would deceive you, and they should not be friends or protectors; on the other hand, Christians are nearest to the Muslims because of love.

Hmmmm, not sure I follow the logic there.

  • 100 Questions from the Qur'an

More on how Muslims are commanded to relate to the people of the book.

Q3:100 = “O ye who believe! If ye listen to a faction among the people of the book, they would (indeed) render you apostates after ye have believed!”

Sounds like Muslims are supposed to be wary of PofB evangelizing Muslims.

  • 100 Questions from the Qur'an

More on how Muslims should treat the people of the book:

Q3:64 = “O People of the Book! come to common terms as between us and you . . .”
    What are those common terms?
    PofB must worship Allah
PofB must not associate partners with Allah
PofB must not have patrons other than Allah
So, if there are to be “common terms” it must be on Islam’s terms.
That is the PofB moving towards Islam, not Muslims moving towards the PofB.

I don't begrudge this attitude on the part of Muslims - in fact it mirrors my attitude toward Islam! My problem is that there are Christians, those who should know better, who are willing to move closer to Islam ideologically in order to promote "peace." When Christians take on the Islamic worldview rather than maintaining a Christian worldview, the result is not peace, but dhimmitude.
